The head design I have at the top of the page is my first idea for R5-4M's head. I thought it would be interesting if R5-4M fought in the Clone Wars aboard an ARC-170 starfighter like this one:
I don't know of any other R2 Builders out there attempting a color scheme like this so I thought it might be unique. This way I could easily identify him in a room full of other R2 Builders' creations.

First real update
I have been working on the R2 Dome for the past few days. I cut off the top half of the inner dome so I could get it to fit better at the top. The cuts won't be visible so as odd as it looks now it will look fine when its done.
Next I need to cut the pie plates out of the top piece because I intend on having opening pie plates.

And so it begins...
This is the start of the build blog for our family project: building a full-size remote controlled astromech droid.
We will be building two droids. A standard R2-D2 as well as a customized R5 unit called R5-4M. For those who are wondering the 4M stands for "For Mya" with Mya being our daughter. Stay tuned here for all future updates!
